Abstract: One hundred adults aged 65 years or older were divided into three groups based upon their responses to a single-frequency screening test (i.e., 2000 Hz) administered at 40 dB HL: (a) pass both ears, (b) fail one ear, and (c) fail both ears. Two self-report questionnaires, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screen (HHIE-S) and the Self-Assessment of Communication (SAC), showed similar performance within each of the three screening groups and within the female and male groups. The results suggest that the two questionnaires could be used interchangeably. It is suggested that a single-frequency, screening test and either of the questionnaires be used to identify elderly individuals who display either a hearing impairment or handicap due to their hearing loss.
