Abstract: Examined contributions of situation-specific attributions and general parenting attitudes in predicting mothers' responses to child behaviors. One hundred mothers of 6- to 10-year-old boys read descriptions of a child failing to comply with a mother's request and rated their attributions for both the child's and their own role in causing the child's behavior, along with their anticipated response to the situation. Mothers also completed measures assessing parent empathy and investment in parenting. Results indicate that mothers' situation-specific attributions both for the child's and their own role in causing the behavior as well as general parenting attitudes accounted for significant, unique variance in response scores. Attributions of more internal and controllable child behavior, of more internal and controllable mother behavior and less investment in parenting all predicted more intense parenting responses.
