Visual recognition of objects and words

Journal/Book: Sprache Kognit. 1995; 14: Langgass-Strasse 76, CH-3000 Bern 9, Switzerland. Verlag Hans Huber. 174-192.

Abstract: The article deals with the recognition of objects and words. Recognition is defined as ascribing meaning to stimuli. The process of ascribing meaning to a stimulus is analysed and the memory representations on which this process is based are described. The core assumption is that during recognition, modality-specific representations are identified. These representations lead to the activation of concepts which are associated with them. This core assumption is differentiated with regard to the assumed representations and processes. Moreover, it is assumed that some processes of visual object recognition also underly visual word recognition because visual object recognition is phylogenetically older than visual word recognition. On the basis of this assumption, the communalities as well as the differences between object recognition and word recognition are analysed.
