Effect of perceived choice of music on exercise intrinsic motivation

Journal/Book: Health Values. 1995; 19: PO Box 10949, Calder Square, State Coll, PA 16805-0949. Png Publications. 18-26.

Abstract: This study, which was guided by cognitive evaluation theory, examined the effect of perceived choice of music in an aerobic dance videocassette on female adults' exercise intrinsic motivation. Thirty-four subjects were randomly assigned to either (a) the experimental group that was led to believe that the music played represented their previously reported music preferences or (b) the control group that was not asked about their music preferences. Each subject exercised to a 25-minute aerobics videocassette in privacy and subsequently completed an intrinsic motivation measure. The perceived-choice group reported higher intrinsic motivation than did the control group.
