Gender Roles During the War - Representations in Croatian and Serbian Popular Music 1991-1992

Journal/Book: Collegium Antropol. 1995; 19: Mose Pijade 158, P O Box 291, 41001 Zagreb, Croatia. Sch Biological Anthropology. 91-101.

Abstract: The text focuses on the question of how the two genders have been determined in the Croatian and Serbian national discourse during the war, the picture of gender offered by the ruling and opposing discourses, how the structure of the community and the relation of the community as a whole towards the opposing community has been metaphorised by the pre-conceptions concerning gender opposition, and how male and female musicians in various popular music genres delineate and form all these intermeshing structures. The encounter between power systems and music represent, paradoxically, the ineffectiveness of music, while its power, its humanistic potential, is concealed in the ability of music to be an opaque but fruitful sprout of revolt and an intimation of the different, both at the level of production and reception. Popular music is a place of permeation, confrontation, acceptance and resistance.
