Etiology and therapy of generalized anxiety disorder

Abstract: This article reviews current research on the etiology and therapy of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Although GAD occurs frequently and is considered to be the basic anxiety disorder, research on GAD is sparse and insufficient. Models of the development and reinforcement of GAD are missing; as are efficient psychotherapies. A number of reasons for this unsatisfactory state of affairs are being discussed, among them neglect of the patients' worries, a central symptom of GAD.
