Ruta-gravolens L.

Abstract: Ruta gravolens L. (rue) is a traditional medicinal plant. The constituents of rue have been thoroughly analyzed. Current pharmacological research investigates the scientific basis for known traditional uses of rue. In the present paper, the modern image of rue is enriched by references to the plant's cultural history and traditional medicinal uses. In sources from antiquity (Dioscorides, Plini), in medieval recipes (»Lorscher Arzneibuch<), and in sources from the Medical School of Salem (Antidotarien, »Circa instans«, »Liber iste«) rue is mentioned and numerous indications are described. Illustrations of rue in herbals and depictions of rue in arts are a second means of transmission for the plant's importance in a time period in history.
