Schlafapnoe aus der Sicht des Mayr-Arztes

Abstract: Sleep apnea is characterized by the fact that respiration comes to a standstill of 1 0 seconds or more while the person is asleep. 10 phases of apnea per hour are said to be pathological, more than 20 phases are a serious danger to the patients health in the long run. The disfunction is caused by a lack of cerebral control, which means that breathing does not set in despite the need of oxygen. This leads to high blood pressure and pulmonal hypertension, thus mainly affecting the patient's cordial and cerebral functions. The immediate symptom is drowsiness during daytime which again increases the risk of accidents.Nasal continous positive airway pressure is the only acknowledged therapy so far. This therapeutical method, though effective, diminishes the patient's quality of life considerably. In spite of all the research done in this area the pathogenesis of sleep apnea is still unknown. Anyway, the atony of the pharyngeal mussels bound to sleep apnea must necessarily result from the impact of toxic substances on the brain. These toxic substances are mainly caused by a dysfunction of the digestive organs. This means that ineffective digestion over a longer period of time leads to decomposition. In the course of resorption the products of decomposition affect all physical functions. This process increasingly sets in at dawn. Depending on their concentration these toxic substances leed to narcosis of varying degree. Whereas minor disorders result in snoring, heavy intoxication seriously affects the working of the respiratory system. In the course of a treatment following Mayr snoring and sleep apnea stop merely by means of dieting. The patient can be considered as cured for the rest of his life provided that he manages to change his eating habits in the long run.
