A description of reflexology practice and clientele in Denmark

Abstract: Reflexology is the most frequently used alternative therapy in Denmark. A descriptive study of 480 trained reflexologists was carried out in Denmark in 1992; of this number, 380 (791/o) practised reflexology. On the basis of two questionnaires, data were gathered about the reflexologists' practice and clientele: the majority of the practising reflexologists are women over 40 years old, the majority of whom work at home. Half of the reflexologists use reflexology exclusively, while the other half supplement reflexology with massage, acupuncture, psychotherapy, diet counselling and kinesiology. The client study indicates that most are women and the most frequent health problems addressed to the reflexologists are pain in muscles/body; stomach pain/digestive problems; asthma/bronchitis/allergy; headache/migraine and hormonal problems. Twenty-three per cent of clients have not been treated by a doctor for the problem(s) for which they contacted a reflexologist.
