LIV. 52 in Patients with Alcoholic Licer Cirrhosis - Pilot Study of a Controlled Clinical Trial

Author(s): Etzel, R.

Abstract: The effect of a treatment with LIV. 52, a worldwide used drug for various liver disorders, was investigated in a prospective, randomized, double-blind, and placebocontrolled cross-over study. Twelve patients with well-documented alcoholic liver cirrhosis who have been abstinent in the last 2 months before the study were treated with 3 x 4 tablets of LIV. 52 or placebo over a period of 12 weeks. 'Me liver function was investigated by various quantitative liver function tests: the galactose elimination capacity for the cytosolic function. 14 C-aminopyrine breath test for the micro- somal function, and the nonrenal sorbitol clearance for the liver plasma flow. During the therapy with LIV. 52 all test results improved, whereas a statistical significance (p = 0.003) was only reached for the liver plasma flow. This fact is probably due to the small number of investigated patients. In conclusion, a controlled trial over a longer period of investigation and with a greater number of patients than in this study is needed to evaluate the effects of LIV 52 in liver disease and to study the validity of quantitative liver function tests in such pharmacological studies.
