Der Darm - die Steuerzentrale des Wohlbefindens

Abstract: Regarding all its functions, the human gastro-intestinal tract represents:- Resorption and distribution of metabolites between portal vein and Ductus thoracicus- Oscillating homoeostasis of low-molecular weight biomolecules as well as proton, electron, and ion concentrations within various parts of the gut- Regulation of liquid and electrolyte influx and efflux in a complex manner via diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and mechanisms of co- as well as active transport- Highly variable, oscillating biosynthesis of enzymes and enzyme cascades whenever required- Linking of signal transduction processes and their feedback reactions- Regeneration of cells, especially enterocytes, at a vast kinetic rate- Complexly linked immunofunctions as a primary organ of the immune system- Intestinal hormones- As well equipped with a nerve plexus of its own and therefore containing vegetative-neurological connectionsis a highly integrated, self-regulatory organ system, which as a non-linear, complexly linked system does not reach the thermodynamic equilibrium, but interacts in manyfold, harmonically oscillating ways with the also non-linear, complexly linked system of an optimal gut flora. Because of all these functions, especially because of the lifelong sufficient and trouble-free supply of essential as well as non-essential metabolites, vitamins, electrolytes, trace elements, and water in order to permanently synthesize all biomolecules and to provide energy, it is easy to understand that physical, emotional, and mental well-being derives from the command bridge of the gut.
