Complementary therapies on the NHS: the experience of a new service

Abstract: The Lewisham Hospital NHS Trust Complementary Therapy Centre opened in June 1994, and by September had received over 600 referrals. The Centre was established following extensive work with local general practitioners (GPs), complementary practitioners (CPs), and professional bodies; it offers acupuncture, osteopathy, and homoeopathy, free at the point of delivery. Referral is by GP or hospital doctor, and clear referral guidelines have been developed to assist medical staff to identify the best form of treatment for the patient's condition. Conditions treated at the Centre include back pain, gynaecological disorders, and emotional problems. The Centre is a pilot scheme funded by the Health Authority, extra contracted referrals and GP fund-holders. As part of the Lewisham Health Services Research & Evaluation Unit, an extensive evaluation programme is in place, and will include a number of randomised controlled trials. Clinical audit and patient assessments of the service are also included in the evaluation.
