Abstract: Reviews literature on termination in music therapy (MT). Termination of MT affects both the client and the therapist throughout its process. Consequently, it is imperative for music therapists to understand and to apply appropriate termination procedures. Termination occurs when goals have been achieved and the client is capable of growing independently as well as under other conditions. Terminations are initiated by mutual agreement, by the client, by the therapist, and by external factors. Termination is further complicated when circumstances do not allow time for the therapist and client to complete the process. The major tasks of termination are the evaluation of goals, consolidation of gains, establishment of independence, expression of feelings, and healthy separation.
