Abstract: Objective: Aim of the study was the comparison of blood pressure (BP) levels with heart rate (HR) values at rest, during exercise testing, as well as in the recovery period after the test, measured during and alter a three weeks' balneotherapy (B) with radon-thermal or iodine-brine-water.Subjects: 10 male subjects with essential arterial hypertension and a hypertensive BP regulation under exercise conditions were studied while staying twice in two different Austrian health resorts (Bad Gastein and Bad Hall) and in the year between the stays.Design: All patients underwent daily B in the respective water, and occasionally, adjuvant physical therapy.Stress tests were performed twice an two consecutive days of each week of the B periods and single repeating tests were done every 45 days during the year between the two stays. Results: Resting and recovery HR values decreased comparably in both health resorts, whereas HR Patterns during physical load exhibited a different behavior with respect to the B applied. After completing each B stay, HR values increased again, reaching soon former levels. BP regulation during exercise improved during both B periods and in the time thereafter. Conclusions: Our data suggest the repeated B has a positive and long lasting effect an BP values in male hypertensive patients with a pronounced improvement of BP patterns during exercise.
