Abstract: A good nutritional state can improve the quality of life of a cancer patient and can reduce the side effects of the radiotherapy/chemotherapy and/or the operation. This results in the fact, that a diet according to the needs of the patients is an important component of the tumor therapy. According to our present scientific knowledge there exists no diet, which can prevent or heal cancer.There are however general recommendations, as for example the avoidance of risk factors (high consumption of fat, alcohol and sodium cloride as well as the intake of carcinogenic substances in food) and the intake of protective factors (food rich in dietary fiber, certain vitamins, mineral substances and trace elements, certain "secondary vegetable components" and lactic fermented products) which sholud be taken into consideration in the dietary guidance of the patient. lt is important, that the patient chooses his food according to his needs and eliminates metabolic disturbances which are the result of a diet.In the case of patients, which suffer from an impairment of food intake, these recommendations are basically valid, too. However, they have to be changed individually according to the picture of the Symptoms.The aim of alimentary therapeutics is to strengthen the endogenous power of re-sistance as well as to reach an optimum nutritional state.
