Geriatrische Darmprobleme

Journal/Book: Ärztezeitschrift für Naturheilverfahren. 1994; 35/10: 723-734.

Abstract: Disorders of bowel funciton may present in the elderly patient while normally being compensated at younger age. Particularly spastic forms of disease seem to offer more problems in diagnosis and therapy. In constrast low tone of the intestinal wall as well as misuse of laxatives may lead to manifest complaints. Encanced bowel passage caused by various reasons result in completely differing disorders. Nutritional problems are to be taken seriously in the aged as they give rise to a multitude of complaints up to vital consequences. Large and small intestine while belonging to the genetically earliest tissue of body carry huge cellular vitality. According to this, age-related changes are predominantly found not within the particular organ but the striated muscles of the adjacent pervic floor. Results of recent cellular biology show decay of body tissues to be dependent on the mitochondrial oxydative chain and its damage by aging. In contrary to bone, tendom, capsular joint and neuronal tissue, intestine is obviously favoured. Traditional Chinese medicine considers aging as decline in the existing ancestral energy called Tinh. Within this system the function of Tinh seems to apply to embyologically later developed tissues too, the intestine not being mentioned in the original text. Comparison between Chinese observations some 3000 years ago and modern biochemistry might show a surprising coincidence, however.
