What is a Placebo? The Relevance of a Correct Definition for Clinical Research

Abstract: An attempt is made to give exact definitions of placebo and placebo effect, which are as simple as possible. It becomes apparent that in the therapeutic setting the meaning of the word placebo is different from that in drug research. This affects the interpretation of double-blind clinical trials. Furthermore additive and non-additive models of the placebo effect are considered.
