Schlaganfall - Herausforderung an den Arzt

Abstract: Apoplexy (stroke, CVA) is a significant pathological event that changes a life decisively. This condition increases in frequency with age to become the third most common cause of death. Only a truly all-encompassing therapeutic approach can do justice to the physical, psychological and social sequelae. Within the framework of the multiplicity of symptoms involved, the frequent neuropsychological defunctionalisations should also receive due attention. In spite of the modern methods available, the clinical examination still provides the most valuable data for evaluation of the estent and individual sequelae of the condition. Metaboilc and cardiovascular aspects and complication prevention are the main concerns during the acute phase. The most important therapeutic possibilities during the post-acute phase are rehabilitation and out-patient physiotherepeutic maintenance.
