Part 1: Is occupational therapy a complementary therapy? |

Abstract: To those outside the occupational therapy profession, it might easily seem that occupational therapists are just another example of health professionals jumping on the holistic bandwagon by introducing complementary therapies into their practice. However, the history of occupational therapy clearly shows that it always had a holistic philosophy and, indeed, may well have been ahead of its time. Admittedly, for part of its history, occupational therapy was heavily influenced by the reductionistic philosophy on which the Western medical model is based but now it is returning to its holistic roots. This article traces the history of occupational therapy and examines the relationship between the profession and the complementary therapies.
