Pharmacokinetics of cardiac glycoside containing plant-extracts

Abstract: Cardiac glycosides belong to the most potent drugs in the treatment of cardiac insufficiency. For the successful use the knowledge of their pharmacokinetic data is important. The advantage of digitalis glycosides compared to extracts of phytogenic glycosides has been obtained by a comparison of pharmacokinetic data. However, phytogenic cardiac glycosides are positively indicated in patients with functional cardio-circulatory complaints, provided the disposal of standardized extracts with declared phyto-pharmaceutical compounds, evidence of efficacy, sufficiently ascertained bioavailability and possibility of controlling plasma levels during the therapeutical dose adjusting phase as well as recording toxical plasma concentrations.
