Abstract: Yarrow is a herbal drug, already used in ancient times. This remedy is primarily used for dressing wounds and for curing gastrointestinal trouble. Its constituents and indications are similar to that of chamomiles.Spasmolytic effects seem to be based on compounds of the essential oil and flavonoids. Antiphlogistic effects are attributed to azulenes (components of the essential oil) and sesquiterpenelactones. Sesquiterpenelactones with an exocyclic methylene group (i.e. guaianolid peroxides) are considered to be potential allergenes.Yarrow is a polymorph species and its taxonomy is difficult, therefore cryptic characters are used to describe this species.
