3rd International ESCOP-Symposium

Abstract: Research and therapy with phytomedicines were the main topics of the 3rd International ESCOP-Symposium 1994 in Scheveningen. This report describes the multicentre Research project for: the establishment of "European standards for the safe and effective use of phytomedicines" in the form of Summaries of Product Characteristics (SPC), the establishment of a pharmcovigilance system for collation of side effects of phytomedicines and the establishment of an expert group to be concerned with the edition of reviews, methodological and ethical advice and project planning. In a contribution on "Phytotherapy on the European level" problems of the regulation of herbal medicines in the European Community were discussed from the point of view of the Bundesgesundheitsamt. This includes aspects of quality, safety (e.g. anthranoid laxatives and valepotreates), efficacy and therapy. Further topics of the symposium were toxicological aspects of phytomedicines and methods for the assessment of therapeutical efficacy. Tables on herbal drugs used in the European Union and on toxicology of herbal drugs were given.
