Research Comparing the Use of Bicycle and Treadmill Ergometry in Performance Tests with Patients Undergoing a Course of Spa Treatment and Healthy Persons

Journal/Book: XIth World Congress of the International Federation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation September 16-20 1992 Dresden Germany BOOK OF ABSTRACTS. 1992;

Abstract: In the United States treadmill ergometry has been recognized as a performance test method for a Iong time other than in Europe where it has been used only recently. The main points brought up against walk way ergometry are the difficulties in dosage and that the strain is not exactly reproducible. In term of climate therapy ot the moment the endurance training (terrain cure) during cure treatment is in the foreground; it was therefore necessary to use a test method for recording the success of the cure which puts strain on the same muscles which are under strain during the training. Hence treadmill ergometry is to be preferred to bicycle ergometry. However due to the early subjective exhaustion of the patients lactic acid values above the aerobe/anaerobe threshold will not be reached very often i.e. the patients will rareIy reach submaximal Ioad. CausaI research in this lock of metabolical submaximal load was the reason for this study; odditionally different statements concerning the heart frequency in both methods can be found in literature. 41 in terms of heart ond circulation healthy persons were put under submaximal load on bicycle ergometer and treadmill ergometer. Treadmill ergometry was increased following a standardized procedure in 0.33 W/kg steps; the load steps on the bicycle were adjusted accordingly. During treodmill ergometry heart frequency systolic blood pressure and myocardium oxygen requirement (HF x RR) to reach these ... hl
