Music Therapy Research to meet the demands of Health and Educational Services.

Abstract: Health and education services today increasingly demand proven and reliable forms of intervention. Music therapy research has examined a wide diversity of approaches in diagnosis, assessment and treatment to a broad range of populations, but the field of research in this profession remains fragmented and the results of these detailed and valuable invbestigations put to limited use. This paper looks at a range of research studies, considering them with reference to key elements: process, outcome, measurement, reliability, validity and replication. Special attention is paid to the contrasting use of controlled trials and subjective evaluation of observed change in current and previous studies, with additional reference to studies undertaken into the effect of infrasound combined with varying styles of music. This research investigates the effect of this treatment process on people with learning disabilities who have profound physical handicap, anxiety, challenging behaviour and self-injurious behaviour.
