Autistic Children: The Influence of Maternal Involvement in Music Therapy

Abstract: This joint paper is based on the research, 'Autistic Children: The Influence of Maternal Involvement in Music Therapy' carried out by Pierrette Muller in association with Auriel Warwick (Music Therapist) and a group of nine children with their mothers in Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The study investigated whether the involvement of the mother in music therapy enhances the interaction between her and her child, both within the therapeutic context and in other settings. The paper outlines the hypotheses, methodology, system of measurement and results of the research, together with how music was used in exploring a new concept - that of musical interaction between moth, child and therapist. Three of the moth/child partnerships continued beyond the research period. These will be reviewed. This paper will be published by the BSMT later in 1992, price on application.
