Individual Therapy with a Man with Eating Disorders - A Case Study

Abstract: Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are conditions prediminantly occurring in girls and young women, but it is estimated that 5-l0% of all cases occur in males (Crisp and Burns l983). Comparatively little has been written about the male experience of eating disorders, through a comparative study of male and remale anorectics (J. L. Margo l987) concluded that the general picture of the illness in males is similar to that in females. The paper describes short-term music therapy work undertaken in an acute psychiatric unit that specialises in eating disorders. It will focus on a case study of a man with a long-term history of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. Problems closely associated with his eating disorder included: lack of confidence and assertiveness, a very negative self-image and difficult family relationships. With reference to past literature, including the use of music therapy as treatment for eating disorders, this paper will examine how these difficulties were dealt with in a music therapy context.
