Abstract: As a symbol of feelings, music through both its aural and visual components acquires psychodynamic implications. Niklas Luhmann's concept makes it possible to compare music and love. The comparison can be expanded to include experience and acting in a group context, and here leads to the likening of a professional string quartet's possible range of experience and action to that available to a research team in sociology. Music therapy and music-therapy research are also of interest to the sociology of culture, so long as the musical expression is accorded a value of its own. (author)
