Music Therapy with Autistic Children and Adults - ways of understanding autism/how can music therapy expand this understanding

Abstract: I want to present my ongoing work on develping an intertheoretical concept to clear up different ways of understanding/interpreting autism and to point at which influence those different ways of understanding can have on the choice of method in music therapy practice. My main source is my own practial work. Besides I bring in theoretical statements from Swedesh, Danish and German doctors and music therapists. I also want to point at the fact that I, as a music therapist, have to make a clear choice if I want to work with transference/countertransference with those clients or not. If I choose the latter, I can help myself by using knowledge from the latter theories of the self (Kernberg-Kohut etc.) and consciously place myself in the role of a substitutte parent. In such work I have to be sure about which paradoxes I can run into my musical interaction with autistic people. I end up by briefly presenting my own method. This paper will be published by the BSMT late l992, price on application.
