Coping in the short term: The impact of acute care on music therapy practice

Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1992; 11: 99-119.

Abstract: Describes clinical tools for facilitating interventions that will help adult acute care psychiatric inpatients develop interpersonal skills necessary to cope with their hospitalization and empower them to be engaged in their own treatment. Conventional verbal group therapy strategies and their relevance to music therapy group interventions in adult acute care are outlined. Two case vignettes of depressed patients are presented. Combined with a biopsychosocial database for concise information to help the therapist cope in formulating treatment planning and delivery, a cognitive-behavioral framework for music therapy (based on I. D. Yalom's (1983) guidelines for inpatient group psychotherapy) in short-term inpatient clinical practice is suggested.

Note: planning & delivery of cognitive behavioral music therapy group; interpersonal skills for coping & empowerment; depressed & other adult acute care psychiatric inpatients
