Music Therapy and Management

Abstract: Music Therapy and management are often seen as opposing factors in health-care. Music thrapists, while involved in client-related aspects of their profession, find it hard and often unrewarding to focus on managerial aspects like organisation, long-term planning, budgeting etc. High professional standards result in high expectations about working conditions and facilities such as staff, location, instrumenation, etc. When it comes to setting priorities, chances of disappointment and frustration are very real. In a time when long-term planning and budgets become more and more important, decision making on a management level will increase in impact. Quality, maintenance and/or improvement of standards is an important goal in health-care management. In order to achieve this goal, managers are depending on relevant information and documentation by professional specialists. Here the music therapist has a real chance to influence planning and decision making on a managerial level. It is therefore essential to concentrate on these issues and to develop valid strategies of information and communication. In this paper managerial aspects of music therapy are specified. Communication modes and problems are analysed. General aim is to establish a productive exchange between professional (music therapist) and manager.
