Depression and feminine personality development

Abstract: Explores the relationship between the occurrence of depression in women and their psychosexual development. A review of the literature and a case study (a Black woman in her early 30s who was referred to art therapy after hospitalization for major depression) highlight such issues as relational sense of self, conflicted aggressive drive, and internalized patriarchal values that are a result of the developmental process. Art therapy highlights the importance of the symbolic process as a means of facilitating personal growth in individuals suffering from depression.
