Abstract: 30 Ss (aged 18-40 yrs) with dual diagnoses of mental illness and substance abuse received specialized intensive case management services and special activity resources, including music therapy (MT). MT interventions were divided into the categories of music discussion, music instruction, group participatory music, music listening, and expressive music intervention. They were also related to the stages of dual diagnosis treatment: engagement, crisis intervention, stabilization, active treatment, and recovery. The MT interventions recommended for each stage are discussed and illustrated with case examples. MT seems to be an effective medium for facilitating S progress.

Note: music therapy; 18 40 yr olds with mental & substance abuse disorders
