Listening to the Depths - Description or Explanation?

Abstract: The paper will examine a phenomenological approach to music therapy practice and assessment coming from the tradition of creative music therapy. This descriptive and formal approach will be compared to an 'explanatory' approach (where music therapy is assumed with a psychodynamic model) and evaluated in terms of: l. The epitemology of the therapist, to whom the depth of listening to the music itself becomes imperative to the quality of both assessment and practise as inseparable aspects of the process. 2. The therapeutic process, where improvisation becomes 'trying on a new form' 3. The perspective of the individual client, and of a music therapy group (to whom no verbal or explanatory model has been presented). 4. The value of a phenomenological approach in cross-modal clinical formulation, where discourse can be shared in the descriptive mode.
