Abstract: Objective: Regular sauna bathing is to reduce susceptibility to respiratory diseases. Apart from improved thermoregulation, immunological diseases of the organism are supported to be further mechanisms. It was a matter of concern to check local resistance in the oral cavity an connection with statements concerning incidence and duration of disease.Subjects: Over a one-year-period of observation, in a group of 20 nursery-school children, nine of whom served as controls, the numbers of diseases and of the days of infectious diseases were determined, and the secretory IgA were six times examinated before and after sauna (immunoelectrophoresis according to Laurell).Design: The results were statistically checked using the ?2-test and, as continuous random samples, the Wilcoxon-Wilcox-test.Results: In the sauna group, the number of infections was significantly lower than in the control group, and so were the numbers of the days of illness. After six months, sauna was always followed by a significant increase of IgA.Conclusions: As a result of the study, regular sauna bathing of children can be recommended to reduce susceptibility to acute respiratory diseases.
