Is TENS a Placebo?

Abstract: In conjunction with the present discussion relating to the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation TENS), a Medline search was carried out to identify all clinical trials with this type of therapy. Out of 70 trials 53 reported TENS to be effective and 17 were inconclusive on this point. Even though the average scientific quality of the 17 'negative' studies was slightly higher, the difference was not significant. Our findings show that the majority of the published data supports the hypothesis that TENS is superior to placebo.
