The European School of Osteopathy (ESO) - its origins and developments

Abstract: The origins of the European School of Osteopathy (ESO) lie in France where the parent school (the Ecole Francaise d'Osteopathie) began life in 1951. It was only in 1974 that the ESO proper began its existence, offering a four year full-time course in English, leading to the award of a diploma in osteopathy. The course achieved GCRO (General Council and Register of Osteopaths) accredited status in 1983 and this was reaffirmed in 1988.ESO academic policy is based on the modified concepts of Andrew Still and J Martin Littlejohn. Gradually the ESO technique' has evolved, being a broad spectrum approach to osteopathic treatment. The first two, preclinical, years of the course are mainly concerned with theory, and the last two, with theory and practice.Recently, the School has been extensively reviewing the curriculum and the various options for converting the course to one of degree status. Areas requiring remedial work have been identified and the School infrastructure modified appropriately to achieve the required goals.
