Abstract: There are numerous indications for iontophoresis in the maxillofacial region, however, predominantly it is applied in the therapy of inflammatory disorders and pain. The efficacy of this physical treatment method was examined in a controlled randomized study in 38 patients with an inflammatory-reflective trismus. The additional application of iodine iontophoresis compared to a sole stretching treatment led to a statistically significant accelerated increase of mouth opening, a quicker release of pain and a reduced inpatient treatment. Thus, iontophoresis excels as an effective and unexpensive treatment method.
