Abstract: The courses of the meridians were studied by means of various methods including: telethermoghraphy, scinti-photography and a computer-assisted gamma-camera. The radioactive substances used were thallium and later technetium 99. All methods compare the results of acupuncture points and placebo points. 1. The distribution of a technetium injection into an acupuncture point is definitely not venous, lymphatic nor aterial. It has its own specific form.2. We verify that the pictures of these processes can be reproduced under the same conditions. 3. The changes in teh speed at which the isotopes are distibuted in a specific pattern corresponding to the meridian of the acupuncture point into which they were inhected seem to be related to the pathological state of the individual subject. Based on our initial analyses and with certain reservarions until the control studies we are undertaking at present have been concluded, it seems that: - a noticable increase in the speed of the isotopic changes may indicate a pathological form of inflammation in the cell and organ tissues depending on the the meridian tested. - a noticeable reduction in the speed of the isotopic changes may indicate a pathological form of degeneration of the cell and organ tissues depending on the meridian tested. Based on these observations we are, at present, undertaking further experiments. We are attempting to develop a simple diagnostic test which could be included in the test battery used nowadays for early diagnosis e.g. to locate a tumor. 4. The periodic waves seen on the time curve are not the main object of this present analysis. They were included as part of the overall findings on meridians. 5. The interpretation of the findings regarding a meridian have resulted in the following work hypotheses: - There seem to be several, linked phenomena involved in the transmission of signals along a meridian. It will therefore be necessary to include various specialized branches of science in a study on ths topic. - Two main mechanisms seem, at present, to be involved: 5.1 A permanent ionic displacement, but with variable flow in the connective tissue, which passes along pathways, or at least parts of them, which have a lowered resistance and a more or less topographical allocation and reach the areas of the neurovascular bundles. 5.2 The release of neurotransmitters and the local physiobiochemical changes caused by the intervention in and stimulation of an acupuncture point, either manually, with an electrical needle, with the laser beam or other forms of electromagnetic stimulation. This causes changes in the ionic flow within the pathway on which the stimulated acupuncture point is situated and also results in the sending of a new, delayed singal in connection with the changes in the local chemism and the membrane polarization of the neighbouring cells. 5.3 The direct consequence of the above is a reflex effect which is definitely activated from the stimulated point and istelf causes the release of neurotransmitters in the adjacent functional fields on one or both sides. 5.4 Local physiochemical changes probably effect variations in the membrane polarization of certain endo- or extreavascual circulating cells. This would also explain some of the results of our studies in the field of cytology. We found that the stimulation of an acupuncture point (not only using a needle) resulted in a membrane polarization of the granulocytes but did not affect the erythrocytes. 6. the ingenius concept of oriental tradition which includes all phenomena in a single energy plan could also be a way of combinig the different mechanisms in a fundamental unity. In our opinion, scientific research should also aim at a holistic approach to attain a concept of unity.
