Orthosiphon aristatus

Abstract: Orthosiphon aristatus (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant from Southeast Asia which is currently used as a diuretic in kidney and urinary tract disorders. The secondary constituents of 0. aristatus are reviewed with special emphasis on flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and their possible relevance for the diuretic activity of the herbal drug (Orthosiphonis folium). Furthermore the capacity of cell suspension cultures of 0. aristatus for the production of rosmarinic acid following elicitation with yeast extract is demonstrated.
