Toxicological Damages of the Liver Caused by Working with Chemicals and Environmental Substances

Abstract: In the confrontation with the chemical environment the liver acts as a passive target organ (hepatotoxicity), but also as an active reaction organ (biotransformation). Chemical substances can cause enzyme induction and inhibition. Some enzyme polymorphisms are suspected to support chemical cancerogenesis. Certain chemical compounds cause toxic liver damage through reactive metabolites (free radicals, epoxides). Here chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (HCB, PCB, PCP TCDD) are particularly problematic.
