Abstract: Priming and adaptation are important in regulating the response of cells to agonists and antagonists. Blood neutrophils are highly responsive to external stimuli and have been largely utilized for studying these pheno- mena. Priming is defined as an increase of responsiveness exhibited by cells that have been pretreated with sub-stimulatory doses of various compounds active at receptorial level. Priming is generally observed when the pretreatment is done with agents different from those used in the stimulation. On the other hand. adaptation has been recognized primarily as a homologous phenomenon: a decrease of responsiveness can be induced by pretreatment of the cells with the sam ll.
