Developmental sequence in music therapy groups: A review of theoretical models

Abstract: Discusses basic principles of the developmental sequence in groups with descriptions of selected theoretical models of music therapy groups. A review of 6 theoretical models describes the developmental sequence or levels in the group, the goals and objectives for each stage of development, the music therapist's role in facilitating the stages of the group, and examples of music therapy intervention techniques and activities used in the respective developmental sequences. These models are based on such approaches as group psychotherapy, transactional analysis, and behavior therapy. A framework is provided for the music therapist to make clinical applications to groups of children, adolescents, and adults. ABSTRACT 2: This article discusses basic principles of the developmental sequence in groups with descriptions of selected theoretical models of music therapy groups. A review of six theoretical models describe briefly the developmental sequence or levels in the group, the goals and objectives for each stage of development, the music therapist's role in leading or facilitating the stages of the group, and examples of music therapy intervention techniques and activities used in the respective developmental sequences. These models represent a variety of theoretical and philosophical orientations in the use of music therapy with groups. The article provides a framework for the music therapist to make clinical applications to groups of children, adolescents, and adults.
