El placer musical. (The enjoyment of music.)

Abstract: Proposes to study the nature of musical pleasure from a psychoanalytic perspective, starting with the setting required for the full enjoyment of this esthetic experience, which is also an experience of symbolization. The musical listener's ego, suffused by Eros, transgresses an inner boundary, that of the everyday ego beset by annoyances, pain, and limitations. In attempting to describe the essence of the musical experience, the author explores creativity and creation. Related topics addressed include: "psychic operators," an extension of D. W. Winnicott's (1958, 1965) transitional objects; the prelinguistic system (e.g., E. Eco; 1968; J. Kristeva; 1975; 1983; 1984); music as suffused by desire; and G. Mahler's description of music recalling Freud's "oceanic feeling" and the pleasure of a boundless narcissism.
