Music therapy and bibliotherapy in the rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury: A case study

Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1991; 18: 149-156.

Abstract: Presents a case study of a woman who sustained a severe cerebral trauma in a motor vehicle accident, and describes her rehabilitation in which music therapy played a pivotal role. Brain-stem damage had left her with extreme motor dysfunction throughout her body, including the absence of functional speech. The S's love of music and lyrics eventually led to bibliotherapy and to her use of songwriting as a creative mode of expression. The procedures for establishing a bibliotherapy program were within the cognitive cycle model outlined by Y. Gross and L. E. Schutz (1986). The procedures were (1) self-identification of goals, (2) establishment of preconditions under which goal satisfaction is able to occur, (3) development of a plan for action that a trigger-event will set in motion, (4) continued awareness of the trigger and the initiation of activity, and (5) feedback.
