A Soothing Balm - Music and the Traumatised Child in Hospital.

Abstract: When I was considering speaking at this conference I felt somewhat daunted by the fact that I am not a therapist, nor do I reach music exclusively and my work is by no means just with the terminally ill. However as I reflected on what I do, and more importantly, the effects that I see of using music with children in hospital, I felt that I have indeed a unique contribution to make towards the overall picture. I am a school teacher in the Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormond Street, London. I therefore work as part of a team with children of all ages and great variety of medical conditions. Of course very different conditions may be terminal but I have chosen to focus on the group of children with whom I have most dealing - children wtih cancers or leukaemia. Even amongst these are are, thankfully, many who will survive. The point is that often during their time in hospital their prognosis is unclear.
