Creative group work with confused elderly people: A development of sensory integration therapy

Abstract: Describes an approach based on sensory integration therapy and object relations theory that was used with confused elderly residents in a psychiatric hospital. Emphasis is placed on the nonverbal response of the individual, thus giving people with severe communication problems access to therapy otherwise denied them by other more task-oriented approaches. Three kinds of groups are described: the sensory integration group, the sensory gardening group, and the occupational therapy/music therapy group. Four case examples (3 women aged 80, 81, and 90 yrs and 1 man aged 73 yrs) are provided.
