The role of a creative arts group in the treatment of clients with traumatic brain injury

Abstract: Presents a brief review of the literature on the treatment of clients with traumatic brain injury, noting the emphasis on the need for programs that focus on socialization and on the families of patients. Using art and music media, therapists can address the functional skills of individual patients and encourage improved social skills, while providing the emotional outlet that is necessary for patients and families involved in a rigorous physical rehabilitation program. The structure for one such group is described. The group's activities fall into 5 categories: individual processes, partner projects, group efforts, seasonal activities, and community experience. Documentation is presented for an 18-mo period during which 48 patients and family members participated.
