Healing the wounded father: A pilot study of the use of creative arts therapy in exploration of male identity issues

Journal/Book: Pratt Institute Creative Arts Therapy Review. 1991; 12: 41-50.

Abstract: Six male college students participated in a pilot study to see how today's young men perceive their fathers and what kinds of visual images they create to represent a father's figure. The Ss were asked to create an image of their father using available art materials and completed pre- and postdrawing surveys to determine factors influencing the son's relationship with his father. In agreement with S. Osherson's (1986) findings, the image of the father as a figure experienced in childhood was most clearly illustrated in the form and content of the group's art. In addition, the view of the father as distant and unemotional and the lack of intimacy between father and son was graphically illustrated.
