Grundlagen der Ernährung des Säuglings

Journal/Book: Ärztezeitschrift für Naturheilverfahren. 1991; 32/2: 96-105.

Abstract: Within the frame of a presentation of data related to the nutrition of infants questions are discussed which are still open. No doubt that breast milk represents the optimum adaptation to the nutritional requirements of the young infant and that in spite of sometimes higher contents in residues and detrimental substances a six months' period of breast-feeding is to recommend. Breast-fed infants develop almost without any problems. Commercially available ready-prepared baby foods are usually used for the nutrition of not breast-fed infants the composition and properties of such formula preparations are made alike with breast milk. However, not all biologically active substrates of the breast milk can be substituted in such preparations. It is increasingly discussed whether baby food prepared by the mother herself can be used and, thus, the infant can more naturally be nourished with such food than with commercially available ready-prepared baby foods. The question is particularly actual whether semi-solid or solid meals administered in addition to or gradually replacing breast-feeding or bottle-feeding (in the feeding pattern of the infant with the beginning of the 5th month) must contain meat or iron additives in order to provide sufficient iron. The nutrition Committee of the German Society for Paediatrics has made such recommendation. Today it is faced by the result of an investigation according to which also a lacto-vegetal babyfood to be administered in combination with breast milk or formula preparations (administered as granoVita Baby Food with a protein combination inclusive of lact-albumin derived from whey) is able to ensure the iron supply. Therefore, it should an principle be possible to feed infants in the first year of age an a lacto-ovovegetal basis and to gather findings with respect to the iron household that correspond to such of a control group to which meat-containing semi-solid or solid food was administered in combination with breast milk or formula preparations.
