The Psychology of Patients Suffering from Acne

Abstract: It is mainly young people who are affected by acne, in a phase of their development when social contacts are most important. Taking up these contacts is made more difficult by the visible and subjectively felt disfigurement of the skin. A study with 420 patients with acne shows that they often also suffer from depressions, social fears, and negative self -experience. Increasingly suffering under the pressure of the disease, the patient, after various attempts of self-treatment, comes to the doctor - most commonly to the general practitioner. The success of the therapy depends greatly an the compliance of the patient. It is therefore necessary to motivate the patient to take part in long-term treatment.
